Two DPhil Studentships

Oxford University Computing Laboratory

Two DPhil (PhD) studentships are available to work on an EPSRC-funded project concerning a new, systematic approach to software verification using semantic ideas and techniques, in the group led by Professor Luke Onghttp://users. comlab.ox. ac.uk/luke. ong/

The students will work on the algorithmics of infinite structures, automata-theoretic approach to the verification of higher-order procedural programs, temporal and other logics for specifying behavioural properties, using game semantics and other semantic ideas and techniques. The students will be trained to carry out research in both the theory and practice of software verification, construct software tools, perform industrial case studies and experiments where appropriate, and write and present research papers.

Fully funded by EPSRC for three and a half years, the studentships are available from October 2008 at home/EU level, and will include a stipend of £12,600 (non-EU students will require supplementary funding). The successful candidates are expected to start in October 2008.

Candidates must have (or expect to have) an excellent computer science degree or a degree in a closely related subject such as mathematics that has a significant component of computer science, and must satisfy the admissions criteria for studying for a doctorate at Oxford

The studentships require previous knowledge of at least one of the following: semantics or principles of programming languages, logic and discrete mathematics related to computer science, lambda calculus and types, computer-aided verification, compilers, and program analysis. Strong programming skills and interest in industrial applications will be essential for one of the studentships, and an advantage for the other.

How to apply
The deadline for receipt of applications is 14 March 2008. You can either apply online or download the University’s application form from:

PhD Studentship
Use of Active Computer Vision to Identify Emergency Events for Living-alone Older People
School of Systems Engineering

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Computer Vision

Title of research project: Use of Active Computer Vision to Identify
Emergency Events for Living-alone Older People

The research aims to develop a proactive monitoring system based on
computer vision technology that will automatically detect emergency
events at homes where frail elders live alone. The novelty of the
project lies in applying computer visual surveillance to target real
user needs, in developing robust methods and algorithms for the
interpretation of indoor emergency events, and in examining the
feasibility of the integrated monitoring system for aged people from
the perception of health and social services. This monitoring must be
achieved in a non-intrusive yet robust and cost-effective manner.

To be robust, a number of significant research challenges must be
addressed. The core task is to automatically detect emergency events
such as falls, burns, or abnormal daily behaviour based on real-time
image data. The research will produce effective approaches for
vision-based behaviour interpretation under designated scenarios.
Eligibility

Candidates would normally be expected to achieve or have achieved
first class honours degree or Master degree in Computer Science,
Mathematics, Physics, Electronic Engineering or related area.
Finances

The studentship includes i) a stipend of approximate £12600 per year
for 3 years; and ii) full provision for academic fees for Home-EU
students. Non-EU (overseas) students may apply and are still eligible
for the stipend but they will need to demonstrate that they are able
to fund the difference between home/EU and overseas academic fees
(approx. £6K per year).
Applications

Graduates and final year undergraduates interested in these areas are
strongly encouraged to apply. For informal enquiries, please contact
Dr. H. Wei at h.wei@reading. ac.uk or Dr. Rachel McCrindle at
r.j.mccrindle@ reading.ac. uk.

Application packs may be obtained from the Faculty of Science, e-mail:
scipg@reading. ac.uk . General information about University of Reading
may be found at: http://www.reading. ac.uk.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 10th April 2008.
